Meet yOUR SENSEI
When it comes to experience, dedication, and mastery of martial arts, Professor Anthony Caravelli, also known as Coach T, stands as an icon. With five decades of experience, Coach T is a true master of his craft, a beacon of inspiration to all those who share his passion for martial arts. His life’s work—spanning over 50 years—has shaped him into a very respected and accomplished martial artists in the world today. Truly, as a “Master of the Arts,” Coach T embodies everything martial arts stands for: discipline, resilience, and continuous growth.
Hailing from San Jose, California, Coach T is a proud product of the renowned American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), one of the world’s most prestigious martial arts academies. His martial arts journey began at the tender age of nine in the 1970s, marking the start of a lifelong commitment to honing his craft. Since then, he has earned black belts in multiple martial arts disciplines, and his expertise spans a variety of systems, including Muay Thai Kickboxing, Karate, Kenpo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Judo, Boxing, Escrima, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Tang Soo Do, and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
Coach T’s lifelong devotion to martial arts transcends the boundaries of any single discipline. His deep understanding of multiple martial arts systems has led him to a philosophy of blending the most effective elements from each discipline to create a more well-rounded approach to combat. His immense skill set and versatility have earned him the nickname “The Style Blender,” a fitting moniker that reflects his remarkable ability to harmoniously integrate techniques from multiple martial arts into a seamless and effective fighting style. Whether through devastating strikes, tactical grappling, or fluid transitions between disciplines, Coach T’s approach is one of unrivaled depth and artistry.
In 1983, Coach T’s martial arts journey took a pivotal turn when he met the legendary MMA coach, Javier Mendez, in a Tang Soo Do class in San Jose, California. At the time, Coach Mendez was an emerging martial artist, and Coach T was refining his skills in boxing. One day, as Coach T was preparing for class, he noticed Javier in the corner, shadow boxing with intense focus. It was clear they shared a deep passion for combat sports, and that moment marked the beginning of a lasting bond between them.
As their friendship developed, Coach Mendez, who was teaching at a local health club, invited Coach T to train with him. Over time, Javier’s vision began to take shape, and he transitioned to teaching at a friend’s glass shop in the evenings. This was when Javier made the decision to focus on kickboxing, stepping away from traditional martial arts. Coach T, eager to learn and grow, followed Javier’s lead and became one of his top students. Coach Mendez often recalls how talented Coach T was, with exceptional potential in martial arts, a sentiment that reflects the strong mentor-student relationship they built during those formative years.
In the years that followed, Coach Mendez’s vision for a comprehensive combat sports gym came to life with the opening of the first American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) on Foxworthy Avenue in San Jose. This was around the time when the UFC began gaining national attention. Javier’s goal was to create a gym that embraced a variety of martial arts disciplines—Judo, wrestling, boxing, jiu-jitsu, and kickboxing—all under one roof. AKA quickly became one of the first gyms in the world to embrace the concept of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in its truest form, a place where fighters could test and refine their skills against opponents from all styles.
Coach T became one of the original members of Team AKA-Shamrock, alongside Crazy Bob Cook and Brian Johnson. As the gym grew, so did the ambition of its fighters. Brian Johnson began competing in the UFC, and soon after, UFC legend Frank Shamrock joined the team. It was during this time that Coach T adopted the same philosophy as Javier Mendez: “Use what is useful, and discard what is useless.” This simple yet powerful mindset became the foundation of MMA, and Coach T stood at the heart of it, training alongside some of the sport’s most iconic figures like Frank Shamrock and Brian Johnson.
While Coach T harbored aspirations of fighting in the UFC himself, life circumstances prevented him from pursuing that dream. Despite this, his commitment to martial arts never wavered. Today, Coach T continues to contribute to the world of MMA by regularly traveling to San Jose to train and help coach with the best fighters in the world at AKA. In a significant moment in September 2024, Coach Mendez entrusted Coach T with the opportunity to open the first licensed AKA gym in Southern California, located in Chula Vista. This honor speaks volumes about Coach T’s knowledge, experience, and dedication—qualities that Coach Mendez has always admired and respected.
As the head coach of AKA San Diego, Coach T now carries the responsibility of representing one of the most prestigious martial arts academies in the world. This new chapter reflects the trust and respect he has earned from the legendary Javier Mendez. With decades of experience, Coach T continues to inspire the next generation of martial artist and fighters, upholding the values and vision of AKA, and playing a crucial role in the ongoing evolution of MMA.
Coach T’s legacy as a coach is as impressive as his personal achievements. Over the years, he has had the privilege of training with and learning from some of the most respected names in the martial arts community, including Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev, Cain Velasquez, Frank Shamrock, Andrea Galvão, Eduardo Telles, and many others. These experiences have profoundly shaped his teaching philosophy, which emphasizes respect, discipline, and a never-ending commitment to self-improvement.
Among Coach T’s most notable achievements is his promotion to Brown and Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by world-renowned instructors Eduardo Telles and Sergio Rios, as well as his promotions to Blue and Purple Belt by André Galvão. These milestones are a testament to his continuous dedication to learning and mastering new skills.
While his accolades in competition are impressive, Coach T’s true passion lies in transforming lives. His mission as a coach is to inspire, empower, and help his students achieve their full potential—not just as martial artists but as individuals. He has mentored thousands of students, guiding them through the challenges of life while fostering personal growth, discipline, and a love for the martial arts.
While Coach T’s technical skill and competition record are nothing short of remarkable, his true passion lies in teaching and mentoring others. He has made it his life’s work to pass on the lessons and wisdom he has accumulated over decades of training. His focus as an instructor is not simply on developing fighters but on nurturing the character and mindset of his students.
Coach T’s students, whether young children learning focus and discipline, teenagers overcoming challenges of self-esteem, or adults striving for health, fitness, and personal growth, are consistently inspired to achieve more than they thought possible. His students often excel in competitions, and Coach T takes great pride in their success—not just in terms of victories and titles, but in the personal growth they achieve along the way.
His youth competition teams have achieved remarkable success, with his students regularly finishing at the top of national, state, and world championships. Between 2012 and 2014, Coach T’s competition team was a dominant force in the martial arts world, with multiple students ranked as #1 in the United States in their respective age groups and belt divisions. His students have earned countless first-place trophies in disciplines such as Taekwondo, Karate, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, cementing his reputation as a coach who knows how to produce champions.
For more than 25 years, Coach T has served as the head instructor and owner of Blue Dragon Martial Arts and American Combat Academy in San Diego, California. Under his leadership, these schools have transformed the lives of more than 12,000 students. His impact goes beyond just teaching techniques; it is about imparting values and biulding character—discipline, focus, respect, and resilience—that will serve his students for a lifetime.
Coach T’s legacy is not just in the championships won, the techniques taught, or the fighters he has helped develop—it’s in the lives he has changed. His influence is felt not only in the ring but in every student who has had the privilege of training under him. His lessons extend far beyond martial arts, instilling values that will serve his students throughout their lives. His students leave his academy not only as better martial artists but as stronger, more resilient individuals capable of facing the challenges of life with confidence and determination.
Through his tireless work and unmatched passion for martial arts, Coach T has earned his place as one of the true masters of the arts. His influence will continue to shape the future of martial arts for generations to come, and his legacy as a mentor, teacher, and martial artist will remain etched in the annals of martial arts history.
